Short Story

In my fictional world, Talents are people born with supernatural abilities. They represent a small percentage of the population, and through a natural progression of human nature, the Talents become feared and persecuted by the general population. The government, ever helpful, creates laws to “deal” with them, as well as a special agency, the National Institutes for Ability Control, or NIAC, as it is commonly known. Unfortunately, although NIAC is charged with protecting the Talents from themselves, as well as protecting the public, their purpose is also to study these phenomenal abilities. NIAC isn’t shy about stepping on civil liberties and human rights in the name of protecting the public and advancing science. And so the Talents try, as best they can, to keep their abilities secret–some more successfully than others. For some, keeping that secret begins to define who they are. That’s where the series begins with Hush Money, a story about Joss Marshall who is starting to learn there’s more life than keeping the secret. Joss’s story continues in Heroes ‘Til Curfew. Impulse Control is a short story about a different group of kids imprisoned at a NIAC State School. Click on the covers for more information.

I bought your book today and read it all… I couldn’t put it down and when I got home from work I rushed on the computer to look for the next book and nothing….. hhhhh… I can’t wait to get on with the story! Love the characters!

    • Aw, Jessica, that’s so sad. I’m sorry to disappoint. I’m hard at work on the sequel even as we speak. How much do you rock for leaving me this comment? Thank you so much.

      • Jahsalyn

is there going to be a third book? not the short story, but a third of Joss and Dylan?

        • Yes, Jahsalyn, thanks for asking. I’m working on the third book right now. It’s called Heroes Under Siege and it will be about Joss and Dylan.

          • Jahsalyn

Yay! I love your writing and how much more realistic it is than most. More specifically, the sexual tension that exists. When I read books about teenagers/young adults I hate that most authors don’t refer to sex, they just kiss and hug. It is unrealistic. I am not asking for tons of sex scenes, but that is a lot of what life is during that time and age. Learning about the experiences of love and relationships. Thank you for your insightful writing and I can’t wait for the next installment.

My nook will be lonely until the new year! Can’t wait for the next installment.

  5. Must. Have. More.

I just finished Hush Money and I must have book two. I believes this qualifies as a medical necessity.

I came across Hush Money back in October and downloaded it to my Kindle. After reading it in one sitting (who needs sleep anyway?), I immediately went searching for the sequel. At the time, I couldn’t find any information and was devastated. I just had to know what else was going to happen. Since then, your story and the “what happens next” question have been in the back of my mind. Today, I decided to do another quick search and was thrilled to find you’ll soon be releasing another installment. As someone who generally reads 15+ books a month, I’m usually pretty easily distracted but your story really stuck with me and I can’t wait to read more. Thanks so much!

    • Thanks for taking the time to write, Jennifer. That’s so nice of you, and great to hear that the Talents are stuck in your head. Please feel free to sign up for the mailing list so you’ll be notified of future releases.

I haven’t read your book yet… BUT it’s wrapped up underneath my Christmas Tree waiting for me. I did get to read a excerpt of it on Amazon though and it looks so good!!! I’m really looking forward to reading it. πŸ™‚ Good luck on the sequel!!!

Hey (: So just wanted to let you know, I LOVED Hush Money!
I bought it it at around 5pm out of boredom and needed something to read, and didn’t put it down (: It’s now 10:38pm, I’ve read the entire book, and I can’t wait to read more!

    • I thought about finding an animated graphic of the Windows spinning hourglass to put here, but that would have been me wasting time that I could be using to…write #2! So I didn’t. Thank you, Mel.

  10. Amber

Hush Money was wonderful πŸ™‚ I’m really excited about the second book. Your story took me through so many emotions. It just had everything in it. So thank you for your talent πŸ™‚ By the way, I’m a mid twenties Mom of a four year old so you’ve got an audience beyond YA. People of any age and of any gender can read this story and love it. I really hope you make a movie out of these. It would be awesome! Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to read more of your stories.

  11. Sydney F

Omg! I am in love with your series! I just got a nook color for chrismas and your delightful novel was the first to be downloaded onto my virtual shelf πŸ™‚ Once I began reading I was so entranced that I could not put it down until I finished. You have created an amazing world with wonderful characters and I will be on pins and needles until “heroes until curfew” is released! Thank you for the awesome read and keep up the brilliant work!

I came across your website looking for information about the next book in the Talent series and was so surprised to see that you take the time to reply to all your fans! I think that is really cool. I’m excited to read the next book- hope it will hit amazon soon! πŸ™‚

    • Thank you, Chrystal! I really appreciate when people come by and tell me they like the Talents. Replying seems like the least I can do, so I do try to keep up. The new book isn’t ready yet, but I’m hoping it gets there soon, too.

  15. Lizzy

O Hush Money was sooo good!!!! I love books that have a cool-guy-quiet-girl fling. Dylan and Joss are soooo cute together! I can’t wait for the new one!!!!!! It sounds like it will be good! 17. Kelsey

I bought your book on my Barnes and Noble Nook and loved it so much I read it in a day! I cannot WAIT for the sequel. The ideas in this book were so unique, I like finding books that veer away from the norm. Keep writing!

  18. Ella

I completely loved hush money and I can’t wait for heroes till curfew comes out! ( love the cover by the way) any ideas of the release date???

    • Thank you, Ella! The cover for Heroes ‘Til Curfew is so awesome. When I opened the file my artist sent me that first time, I jumped in my chair. She’s amazing. I’m still not certain of a release date. Still working. But if you sign up for the newsletter, I’ll be sure to let you know.

  19. I found Hush Money in october on my kindle, and i have be prolonging reading it because i read to quickly for even myself sometimes. Finally last week i made commitment to read and review every book on my waiting list on goodreads. Last night Hush Money was top on my list. i LOVED this book. Your character and story development throughout the book kept me wanting more. i couldn’t put it down and finished it by 7AM (who needs sleep right). Looking forward to the next one! And i have to tell you as an “Out of work” (freakin’ economy) PR person, your blogs crack me up and make me continue to reevaluate what everyone has told me and just do what i dream to do! ❀ thanks for the encouragement!

  20. Jasmin

I bought this book on my kindle at around 11 o’clock last night, and once I picked it up, I could not stop reading. At one point I even tried to get some sleep but all I could do was think about the book. So I ended up staying up waay past the time that was appropriate, and for that, I thank you. It’s been too long since I’ve read a book thats kept me up that late.

  21. Elana

I got your book yesterday on my Kindle and finished it just now (about 9 am EST). Really great (: Hope “Heros ‘Til Curfew” comes out really soon!

  22. So, I just finished Hush Money, and I loved it! First when I downloaded it on my Kindle I though it was gonna be a OK-book because you write the book in more than 1 set of caracters-eyes, if you get me. But I actually loved it, because it was so clean writing between Jose and Dylan. I can’t wait till the second book coms out! Jeez, Hush Money are probably one of my favorite books.
But to my questions, When do you think your next book are coming out? Like, now in January, or late in November?

    Take care, Girl from Norway.

    • Vicky, thank you so much! I’m thrilled to hear that Hush Money surprised you into loving it. I’m not sure when the next book will be out. I’m working on it right now, and I’m adding your name to the newsletter list this morning so you won’t miss the info when I have. Thanks again!

  23. Haley

I just loved Hush Money soooo much!!! i read it in one sitting and can’t wait for book 2! i love how you take the time to answer people’s comments. that is just so thoughtful and nice. Hush Money is one of my favorite books of all time. keep up the good work and i hope that Heroes is realeased REALLY SOON!!!

  24. Rachel

I loved this book. I bought it on my kindle and was absorbed. i can’t wait for the sequel- it’s a necessity. I read a lot, as in I just read 12 books in the last two weeks. Some books stick with more than others a this certainly did.

  25. lindsay

i sadly just finished your book. you are an amazing writer! i wasnt sure i would like this book but it was freaking amazing! i came on the internet to see were i could find the second one but it hasnt come yet!! i know the second one will be just as good as the first. take your time to make the book perfect!

    • Thanks, Lindsay! That’s why I’ve stepped away from the internet for a while, to keep my head in the story and try to get it out to you sooner. I just put out a Talent Chronicles short story called Impulse Control. It’s not about Joss and Dylan, but it’s the same world, about kids in one of the State Schools. If you’re interested, you’ll find it in the ebook anthology Kiss Me, Kill Me along with stories by HP Mallory, Zoe Winters, Kait Nolan, Stacey Wallace Benefiel, and a handful of other authors. And be sure to sign up for my newsletter so you don’t miss the announcement when the next book, Heroes ‘Til Curfew is ready for release. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed my first book.

I absolutely loved Hush Money! The plot was easy to follow, the characters were amazing and the BEST thing about your writing style is that you dont sugar coat your characters’ words at all. And that is exactly how you become a great young adult writer; write how teenagers actually talk and think! You did an amazing job! I shall count the days until that darn sequel comes out πŸ˜‰

  28. Sanas

Just downloaded my first e-book EVER — “Hush Money.” What a totally engrossing experience. I came to the last page (read it in an afternoon) and went, what? Hey, not already! Nooooooo!

I will be looking for the next one when you get it done. May the Muse be with you.
ps I’m decades older than YA, and I loved your story.

    • Aww, thank you so much, Sanas. I’m so happy to hear mine was your first ebook, and that you enjoyed it. Whew, the pressure of being the first! I’m a huge fan of ebooks. I hope you’ll enjoy many more!

  41. Staci

I LOVED your first book in the Talent Chronicles! I was bored, and looking for something to download to my Nook last night. Like so many others, I read it in one sitting! This morning, I checked this site hoping to find out that book two is releasing tomorrow – ha ha! I really can’t wait! Great concept and great writing! As a 30 yr. old teacher with my reading masters, I can promise you that I’ll be recommending your books to kids and adults I come in contact with at work!

    • Staci, wow, thank you! Hope I didn’t keep you up too late. I wish I was releasing the new book tomorrow. I’m so anxious to share it with everyone. But I guess it’s going to be a while yet.

  42. Maddy :)

I think I read hush money and impulse control about 5 times each. I still can’t get enough. I keep checking your website for when heroes till curfew will be released. Its literally killing me. I keep searching for books like it to keep me occupied, well as much as a book could keep a person who read the full twilight series in a week, do you have any suggestions because I can’t find anything. I liked as much as hush money or at least close to. Just want to say how much I love your writing. πŸ™‚ you rock πŸ™‚ oh and i really want to read your short story about when joss got home. Her dad is going to be mad…

    • Maddy, how awesome is it to hear that Hush Money and Impulse Control stand up to five readings!

One thing I really enjoyed in tone is an older series by Meg Cabot. The name of the series is 1-800-Where-R-U, and I think the pen name Jenny Carroll was used. There were five books, starting with When Lightning Strikes in which the main character is struck by lightning and gains a supernatural ability. The main character seems to break the fourth wall a lot, and it sort of feels like you’re floating along behind her as she’s living the story but then every once in a while she turns to you and lets you in on some secret. I don’t know, I just really enjoyed these books.

I was really charmed by a book called The Cinderella Swap by Linda Palmer. It starts out engaging enough and you think you can see what it’s all about, and then it twists. And then it twists again.

While I haven’t gotten back to finish these series, I really enjoyed Glimpse by Stacey Wallace Benefiel and Portal by Imogen Rose.

Hope you find something good in there, and thanks again!

  43. Kate

Can we very respectfully beg Agent Jane to hurry up???! = )

    I want MORE.

  44. Maria

When I first saw it on my recommened I wasnt sure to get it, but the other day I said sure why not? I read it from 11:30pm to 3am and couldnt put it down. I was so happy I found a book that I really liked(its been a while). It’s nice to know that authors dont just write about vampire(thats stuffs old). So I just wanted to thank you for making an awesome book and I cant wait ’till the next one! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Maria! It will probably make you happy to hear that my agent tells me NY really isn’t buying vampire anymore. If they put it out, it’s stuff they bought a few years ago. So hopefully we can expect other things soon! And I can’t wait to share the next Talent Chronicles book with everyone.

  45. Maddy :)

I like can’t wait anymore!!! Can you please at least tell us what month heroes till curfew comes out? I’m dyingnto know!!!

  46. Write! Write! Write! I can’t wait for the sequel to come out!! Please tell us when it comes out so I can start a CountDown!!

  47. celeste

just to start off i LOVED hush money!!! i just saw it one day and though it looked intersting and then i fell in love, its totally differnt from everything out there! but i want to know what happened after the big fight espically between dylan and joss…..but anyways! i cant wait for heroes till curfew:D so keep up with it this books are reallly!! good haha:)

    • Thank you, Celeste! It’s funny you should say that, about it being totally different from everything out there. I think I’ll be talking about that in Friday’s blog. I hope you love HEROES ‘TIL CURFEW as much as I do. Now that I’m done writing it, I can’t wait to be done with the business of it, get it out of my hands and out to readers, and move on with the rest of the story. Hoping you guys won’t have to wait as long for the one after this.

  48. If anyone follows replies to this page, I wanted to let you know that there’s release information on Heroes ‘Til Curfew on the blog today.

I’ve had your book on my Nook for a few months now. I finally read it the other day while stuck in Jury Duty. You are truly an amazing author. I was completely surprised and was immediately pulled into the story. I was soooo disappointed when I couldn’t find the second one. Low and behold I found it on B and N today!!! Cant wait to start reading it. Please keep the series coming!

    • I’m glad you found it, Christine. I had a hard time getting to it myself on BN, so that’s good to hear. I hope Hush Money made Jury Duty a bit more interesting. Thanks and have fun with the sequel!

  51. heya i just finished the 2nd book n i loved it!! im so desperate for the 3rd one, have u got any plans n when its coming out and how many books will ther be in the series. really love the books x

    • Tamara, thanks so much! The planning for book 3 is going really well right now. I’ve very excited about it. No idea when it might be ready, though. So far I think I have plans for as many as 20 books. And that’s a lot for one series. For the most part, the books in this world are falling into groups. These first three will be a Fairview trilogy. Then I’ll start over again using just some of the characters I’ve created so far. (Joss and Dylan will be included, but other characters will take center stage.) The way I have the series planned, there are points at which it will be easier for new readers to pick it up, and hopefully that will also help me keep it fresh, new, and exciting long-time fans.

I downloaded the Kiss Me, Kill Me anthology, and when I finished your story, I had to abandon the book (which I never do!) so I could download and read Hush Money and Heroes ‘Til Curfew! I had no idea Heroes had just come out- which is a shame, since my initial reason for posting here was to nag you for the next installment. I feel like I need to give you a break on that, since you just issued Heroes…so consider this a muted, gentle, but nonetheless earnest nagging:) Thanks for a great read!

    • Well, I sure do appreciate you going easy on me. o.O

    • Heather- In my house, people ALWAYS start talking RIGHT at the good part. My husband is especially bad about this in movies. After the actions over, when romance thing I’ve been watching for is finally about to pay off, he thinks the movie’s over and should start talking. My daughter inherited the gene but I’m trying to train her out of it.

I’m so glad to know you enjoyed them. I’ll try to get the next one out for you as soon as I can. Thanks for taking the time to write!

  61. Aaminah

Hi, my name is Aaminah, i was recommmended your book by samantha young, another brilliant YA author, and although i dont qualify as a teen, i absolutley love your books, Samantha recommended Hush Money, i downloaded it, heros’s til curfew and Impulse control, ive read them all in about a day and half. It was brilliant reading! Cant wait for the next one!

  62. I caught the first book as a freebie and absolutely loved it! Can’t wait for the third book!
Also, I am dying to find out who won the prom dress contest. Please let it be me πŸ™‚

  63. just finished heroes till curfew and I just wanted to say that I love your books. I absolutely love the whole idea of people with abilities. 64. I can’t wait to read your novels. They sound great.

      • Dominick

Last night i read Hush Money and Impulse Control. Usually I just go on to another book but I want to know more! I couldn’t stop reading and i found myself relating to the characters and being nervous as they were or outraged. They are truly amazing books and as soon as i get more money I’ll be buying Heroes ‘Til Curfew. And when does book three come out? Please don’t stop writing. After Joss and Dylan’s story maybe you can introduce a new cast of characters and plot line. πŸ˜€ Thanks for the best reading I’ve found in a long time. (i read alot! haha)

        • @Dominick- Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. I hope you get to read Heroes ‘Til Curfew. Book three, Heroes Under Siege, is in the works right now, and I don’t really have any idea when it will be coming out. But I can say that it’s going well and I’m excited to finish it for you. I definitely have plans for more books after this one, and many more characters. In addition to the state school characters from Impulse Control, there’s a group of crime fighters in the big city no one’s met yet. Thanks so much for your compliments, they really mean a lot. I hope you’ll remember to keep an eye out for Siege.

I loved all three of the books you put out so far! I want to know… will there be more of Ethan and Elle? I cant wait for more of Joss and Dylan! I hope that the couples cross paths, but not in a bad way(state school)!!!

    • Thank you, Danielle! There will be more of Ethan and Elle, but not for a while yet. But at least one other character from Impulse Control wants to show up in Heroes Under Siege. I’m sure the two couples will know each other, as least by reputation, but I’m not sure if and how they cross paths. Thanks for giving me something to think about!

  68. Sarah-Luna

I am addicted to the talent chronicles! I like Joss she is funny and strong female lead. I love Dylan he is hot and sweet! When is the next book coming out ? A vague date some where in future wil help!!!
What about a follow up on Impluse Control Elle and Joss needs to see eachother again it too sad to imagine that the NIAC wins.

    • Thanks for all your compliments, Sarah, wow! Not sure when the next book is coming out. I’m hoping by late summer but it’s going pretty slowly. At least one of the Impulse Control characters will show up at the end of the book I’m working on right now.

I am a speed reader which causes me to be in the middle of anywhere from 5-15 series at a time and right now yours is one that I am awaiting the most. I have read all 3 books and cant wait for the 4th. When is it supposed to come out! I am a very big fan, love the story line, and it has just the right amoung of romance and action mixed in. Great books πŸ™‚

When is book 3 going to be released on to amazon for the kindle?

  77. I read Impulse control in iBooks before realising there is a series. Is the short story to do with the first two? I hope i didnt give anything away to myself by reading this one.
Impulse was great, i couldnt put it down and it was only a short story…. Im definatley going to read the rest now!
There aren’t that many teen books that are so well written, well done and good luck for the rest to come πŸ™‚

    • @Holly, Impulse Control was written after the first book, and while I was working on the second book. It deals with a different set of characters in the same world, characters I hope to re-introduce later in the series. It’s meant to be read at any time. So glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks for so much for your compliments, and I hope you like the rest of the series!
